Installing, Configuring and Using Ghost

Symantec Ghost Installation instructions

Insert the Symantec Ghost Installation disc into the CD/ROM to initiate the auto play sequence. This will display the following screen to which the top option of installing Symantec ghost corporate edition will be selected.

Next select “Install console and standard tools”.
 Click Next to continue.

Next accept the license agreement and click Next.

Put a tick in the box claiming you have read all the information in the window and click Next.

Next enter the Username and Organisation details as per company policies and standards.

This is the destination path for the installation. We will leave this at the default setting and just click Next.

The next window defines how individual features are installed. Leaving this at the default setting we will click Next.

Next enter the account details for registration.

Then click Install.

Once the installation is complete and you have read the “Readme.txt”, click Next.

Then click Finish to complete the setup.

Click Exit next.

Making a Ghost Boot Disc
To make a ghost boot disc to log clients onto the network for the mass deployment of software is performed this way. Click Start in the taskbar and highlight All Programs. Scroll up to Symantec Ghost and highlight it to open another option to the right. Select the Ghost Boot Wizard from this option to open the console.

Select Network Boot Disc and click Next.

Select the corresponding card in the list provided that is installed on the client computers. This would be the Intel Pro 100 then click Next.

Click Next at the next screen to use PC-DOS.

Click Next to determine the client type.

Leave the next screen at the default settings of both boxes un-ticked and the click Next.

This section asks where the clients will get their IP addresses from. Assuming the DHCP is installed and active on the server we will select this option. Then click Next.

The next window asks for an amount of disk sets to be created. One set per computer to be installed = 20 (not including the wireless laptops). Enter the number 20 in the provided space and click Next.

You are now shown a review of the configuration you are specifying for the creation of these boot discs. If you are satisfied with these settings then click Next.

You will be prompted to format the disc before making it. Click Start when prompted.

Click Ok  to the warning about the disc being erased and then click Ok when the format is complete and then close to shut down the format window and to start the disc creation pictured below.

Next you will be prompted to insert the second disc after which you will click Ok.

You will be again, prompted to format this disc. Follow the previous steps to complete the Symantec Ghost Boot disc creation.

Once this is complete you can eject the disc and insert disc number 3. Disc number 3 will actually be disc 1 of the second set of discs and disc number 4 will be disc number 2 in the second set and so on with every odd number disc being disc number 1 in any set and every even number being the equivalent of disc number 2 in any set. So any odd and even number together makes a complete boot disc set.

To create an image using Ghost
Using the Windows XP Professional installation instructions complete a client/workstation install. Next defrag this image. The writer assumes reader knowledge in this area and will skip to the image creation for deployment across the network.

On the server click the Start button and highlight All Programs. Scroll up and highlight Symantec Ghost and then navigate across the opened options to GhostCast Server.

The console opens and in here we will enter a session name. As we are creating an image of XP Professional, that will be the session name. Put a dot in the circle Create image and click Browse to choose a destination for the image to be saved.

Save the image on the partition set aside for Ghost images and name it XP Professional.gho and then click Save.

Then click Accept Clients.

The program will wait for the client to logon. When this happens the program will record an exact image of the configured operating system on the client computer and save it as a file. This is what will be deployed out through the network to the hardwired desktop clients.
