Installing Windows Server 2003

Pre installation procedures

When you run the Microsoft® Windows Server 2003 Setup program, you must provide information about how to install and configure the operating system. Thorough planning can make your installation of Microsoft® Windows Server 2003 more efficient by helping you to avoid potential problems during installation.

An understanding of the configuration options will also help to ensure that you have properly configured your system.
• Check System Requirements
• Check Hardware and Software Compatibility
• Determine Disk Partitioning Options
• Choose the Appropriate File System: FAT, FAT32, NTFS
• Complete a Pre-Installation Checklist

Once you have done this you may proceed with the installation

Microsoft® Windows Server 2003

Microsoft® Windows Server 2003 installs basically the same as Windows XP Professional, with only a slight difference in the display.
Installation
The first screen is similar in appearance as to the Windows XP install and looks like this

You are asked to continue installing server or to quit. Select continue by pressing enter

Press Enter to continue installing Windows® Server 2003

Next is the end user agreement that must be agreed to in order to proceed. This is done by pressing F8 or the ESC key to disagree

Partitioning the hard drive
Creating a partition for the operating system to reside on is determined on this screen. Press the key C and then enter the size of the partition then press Enter.

The next display shows the HDD letter with the partition size along with the remaining space underneath. The partition is highlighted and is where we want to install the operating system. Press Enter

Next you are required to select which type of format you wish to preform. We will select “Format the partition using the NTFS file system (quick)” Highlight this option and press Enter.

This process may take a few minutes to complete but once it does the computer will reboot and Windows® Server 2003 will begin to install. The screen appearance is like this.

The GUI Portion of the setup
Your machine will now reboot with the windows installation screen pictured below, where further configuring will take place.

Regional and language options
Next is the Regional and Language options screen. Click Customize to configure.

Select English (Australia) from the top drop down box for your language and Australia from the bottom drop down box for your region then click apply then ok and then Next

Enter the name (Administrator Name) for the name section and (Company Name) for the company name as pictured below.

Product key
Next enter your 25 digit product key supplied with the software on the packaging.

This section asks how many licenses the product is for. Leave this at the default and click next.

Computer name, network and time settings
Computer name and administrator password are required to be set next. In here you will enter a password known to the administrator only. Then click Next

Next is the time set up for the installation. Click the drop down box in the “Time Zone” section and select “(GMT+10.00) Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney. Then click next

The next section is the networking settings where there are 2 options, Typical settings and Custom settings. We will select Typical settings and click next.

The next option asks if you want this computer to be a member of a domain or a workgroup. As there isn’t a domain set we will select WORKGROUP and enter (Your workgroup name) then click Next. Set up continues.

Once set up is complete windows will boot with the screen logo and then a please wait window whilst windows starts up and does some configuring of its own by applying the settings entered earlier. You will then be asked to enter the keys Ctrl-Alt-Delete to begin. These must be done in order and kept depressed.

Enter you administrator password to logon to windows. Microsoft Windows Server 2003 is now installed and ready to be configured.
Upon starting and by default, Microsoft Server 2003 automatically blocks internet connections for safety reasons to allow you to take the necessary precautions.

Before connecting to the internet we recommend that an antivirus program be installed first.

Updating Windows server
To update Microsoft® Windows sever 2003, click Start in the taskbar and highlight All Programs. Scroll up the option to select Windows Update.

You will be directed to a Microsoft® site where the operating system will be checked for latest updates. If found that the operating system is in need of updates then a prompt will appear where you will click Install. Once this has finished you may be prompted with other instruction to reboot.
